How to Earn Full-Time Income on Part-Time Hours: My 3 Autumn Non-Negotiables

Sunset Jen Lister - holidays

Full-time income on part-time hours means creating a business you love - so you get more time for fun, family and holidays!

If you follow me or work with me, you know I practice what I preach. I work 2-3 days a week, and I’m strict with those boundaries. You won’t find me hanging out on social media over the weekend, and my clients will be the first to confirm that I stick to my boundaries.

Building a profitable business on a part-time schedule isn’t about working faster or squeezing more into your day. It’s about ruthlessly prioritising the high-impact elements of your business.

Why is this important? For me, it’s because I want to love my business, and spend time doing the things I love - being out on adventures with my family, getting to go to the school plays & taking holidays when I want. I have worked 60 hours weeks, I have done the corporate thing, and now my priorities are very different. If you feel like you want to create a full time income on part time hours then read on…

As we come into the Autumn, and get back into our work routines, this is the perfect time to share with you my 3 non-negotiables so you can work towards creating your full time income on part time hours. September always feels like the start of an exciting new year for me. I hope you love reading this article and please get in touch with your feedback by messaging me @jenlisterstrategy.

1. Set Strict Work Boundaries and Use Strategic Time Blocking

Having strict time to work on your business is so important. Some of my clients are still working a full- or part-time job alongside their business, which means they need to be even more intentional with the time focused on their business.

It’s really hard to build a business in the time confetti (I love this phrase) of your days - half an hour here for a social media post, 10 minutes there to reply to a potential client. You just cannot get into the groove of your business, and it’s hard for anyone around you to take it seriously either.

You need to have a set number of hours each week, a working schedule and a strategic approach to your calendar. There are different levels to this, for example, you could start with blocking out 2 hour chunks, 3 times a week - giving you 6 hours a week to dedicate to your business. It may not sound like much, but it’s better than nothing (and trust me, I know people who have been meaning to start their business for ages and life always gets in the way).

Once you have these dedicated times planned out, you need to communicate them to the people that need to know - your partner / children / pets (I’m joking on this one!). Tell them that this is your dedicated business time, go somewhere you won’t get disturbed (even if it means locking yourself away or going out to a coffee shop) and make this time work hard for you!

Using time blocking for productivity is essential when operating on a part-time schedule. Instead of sitting down and asking yourself, "What should I do today?", your calendar should already have dedicated focus blocks for specific tasks. Make sure each time block is for a particular element of your business so that you aren’t constantly switching focus, e.g. do all your marketing tasks in one block, and book client work for another block.

Below are my quick fire actions for you to put better boundaries to grow your business…

How to implement strict boundaries:

  • Create your schedule: Decide how many hours you can commit to your business each week (ideally in a minimum of 2 hours at a time) and book this time in your calendar (and tell anyone that needs to know that you are busy).

  • Protect your off-hours: Set yourself clear finish times and stick to them. Don't let work bleed into your personal time, weekends, or family life.

  • Block focus time: Group similar tasks together - such as client calls, admin, or content creation. This prevents context switching, which wastes energy and time.

  • Communicate availability: Set clear boundaries with clients and contacts so they know your working days, so you can step away without the guilt.

2. Get Crystal Clear on Your Offers, Transformation, and Pricing

When you aren’t clear on what you offer, there is little chance of you making the sale. If you go to a shop and ask to buy something, but the sales assistant doesn’t know the price, you literally cannot buy it. And this goes for your business - you need to be completely clear on your offer and your pricing for someone to buy it. Not only that, you also need to be confident in your pricing. If you are apologetic and sheepish about your pricing, it shows and you won’t achieve the conversion rate you want.

To generate full-time business earnings on a part-time schedule, you need to be super clear about what you are offering to your clients / customers. Here are some questions to help you figure this out:

  • Offer Boundaries: What is the exact scope of your product or service? What do clients/customers actually receive? Do you love your product/service? I always design services I would love to experience (and regularly innovate my services to make sure they are still relevant).

  • Problem & Transformation: What specific problem does your offer solve, and what tangible result does it deliver?

  • Confident Pricing: What is the price of your product or service? Set a price that reflects the value you provide, and remember to practice stating it without hesitation or apology.

Remember: Confidence attracts sales. Make sure that you truly love your product/service and that it still excites you, as this comes across to your audience. If you find yourself apologising for your rates, or feeling hesitant during sales conversations, it is time to review your pricing strategy.

3. Focus Exclusively on High-Value, Revenue-Generating Activities

When you sit down at your desk, what is the very first task you tackle?

Many business owners default to clearing out their inbox or spending an hour tweaking a social media graphic. While those tasks feel productive, they often won’t generate income directly. When working limited hours, every moment spent on low-impact admin drains your momentum and energy.

To scale your business efficiently, focus on revenue-generating activities - the tasks that directly drive sales and growth.

Example high-value activities to prioritise:

  • Following up with warm leads or past clients in a genuine way.

  • Sending targeted email campaigns to your existing subscriber list or previous customers.

  • Attending purpose-driven networking events where your ideal clients are actively present.

When your working hours are limited, revenue-generating tasks need to take priority over general admin (unless it’s tax return deadline day!). I believe every business is different and requires a personalised strategy, but there is always scope to focus on the revenue generating activities that will make an impact.
